‘Team Buckie’
This week I have doubled my staffing. Sadly not an immediate reaction to buoyant sales but by providing the means for the Higher English pupils at Buckie Community High School to create their own bookshop. And what a fantastic bookshop they have created. Wonderful marketing, great signage, smiling booksellers and a very robust finance team were put in place by my new, but sadly temporary, team. They have one week to sell books to their peers and teachers, mainly to help their classmates choose their summer study texts. ’Team Buckie’ have boundless enthusiasm; an extraordinary understanding of business jargon (Do they get this from ‘The Apprentice’ or is Buckie High blazing a trail for the Scottish curriculum’s emphasis on ‘enterprise’?); and an incredibly broad book knowledge. Anyone criticising youth culture or the lack of dynamism in towns of the coastal North-East beware! These kids are a pleasure to work with, have great support from an innovative librarian and contribute heartily to the life of their town and their school. I also recommend ‘The Ice Cream Cabin’ in Buckie town centre. Ask for two scoops in a tub and you can just make it to Portgordon harbour in the car before it gets too soft. There are plenty of benches, a nice park area and the gentle breezes of The Moray Firth.
